Scientifically speaking, only 3-4% of the population can claim medical reasons for being overweight (I mean obese. Not just a few pounds). With those people I empathize.
Everyone else has some form of hand to mouth disease. With those people, I say reap what you sow.

Oh, and LewMan, I usually wear a bleach spotted Salty Dog Cafe shirt, tights and the happy socks of the day. Why do you ask?

A disertation on nutrition might be just the ticket, jumper. You enlightened Raven on the baked potato, didn't you?
Okay....in a nutshell:
It used to be accepted dogma that calories in must be less than calories out as the secret to weight loss. This is true but only up to a point. Nowadays it is just as important to know what KIND of calories you are ingesting.
Recent science has discovered something called the Glycemic Index or the effect of foods on Blood Sugar. Certain foods cause an increase in your blood sugar levels which triggers your body to produce insulin get rid of it. Believe it or not, your body doesn't like sugar in its bloodstream and will do all it can to remove it. It does this with Insulin. Insulin will convert the sugar to fuel your body can use. The caveat is that you body only uses so much fuel which is usually less than what has been convereted. The remainder is stored as fat.
If you exercise, not only do you burn calories (good) but you reduce the amount of fuel stored AS fat as your metabolism slowly ramps up (also good).
An added effect of the insulin is that after all the sugar from your blood has been removed, your body has high levels of insulin which cause you to be hungry (bad).
What the Glycemic Index will do is show you foods that will help keep your blood sugar level relatively even (good). In other words, no spikes no crashes.
White foods, i.e. rice, bread, potatos, pasta, all have extremely high GI levels.
I could go on and on but there is a ton of documentation on this subject available on the net.
